Dreamkana is very helpful as you can easily press "tell me the answer" if you ever get stuck on a certain character. Swinging through both (alphabets) I am able to brush up on katakana and hiragana. This freeware is very helpful for me!

I have been Using DreamKana with my students for a number of years and it is considered an integral and highly valued part of our Japanese program. With over 1100 students at our High School studying Japanese, it is a most effective method of enabling students to practise their Hiragana and Katakana from beginner level.

Yes, I found it good.
I was originally confused with two different answers for hu and fu, but soon learnt which was was expected.

Hello,

I tried to download DreamKana but was unable to because I use a Mac. I live in Japan and I am trying to learn the language. Your programme seemed very comprehensive. I wish it was compatible with my browser. (safari) Please let me know if/when you have DreamKana for Mac. Thank you for the information I was able to get from the website.

Sincerely yours,

Laura L. Fuller

Its great software! Thats the gist of it! :) It has helped me greatly in reinforcing Hiragana that I already knew and Katakana that I did not know before!

I throughly recommend this software! :)

Opinion.

Brilliant and absolutely useful! Easy to learn all the characters in a few days! (please, correct the hu/fu problem!)
Good luck for the future!
Janka from Hungary.

A `hu` for `fu`?

Only disturbing thing I found using DreamKana was when the katakana for 'fu' appeared. When I enter the romaji 'fu' it takes it as a wrong entry. By curiosity I entered 'hu' and then it was taken as a correct entry. I haven't seen any 'hu' either in katakana or hiragana. When the hiragana for 'fu' appeared and I typed 'fu', it was correct. So the only problem is found in the katakana 'fu'. On the other hand, DreamKana is a very interesting way to get the hand of it as it helps you remember all kanas. A nice exercise which is helping me a lot. I just wanted to help you out with this intervention. Thank you very much for your attention.

Dream Kana

an excellent teaching and reviewing aid for studying Hiragana and Katakana. A great benefit is the ability to display the answers of the characters displayed in romaji. Highly recommendable

Solid piece of software

Dreamkana is a solid piece of software and is useful for learning, as well as practising your kana. Helpful for someone like myself who's just started!

Nice work!

Thanks for the free software. It would be nice to limit the kana seen in some manner like katakana of a particular type like k's t's n's etc to learn them in blocks.

Wonderful program, thanks so much for the effort.

Quite Good

It's quite good. Could do with some keyboard shortcuts made more explicit, or not using the Alt button, I find it a bit awkward.

DreamKana - Great Learning Tool

I really enjoy using DreamKana to practice my knowledge of the Japanese Hiragana and Katakana character sets. It saves me the time of making flash cards and keeping track of them. Not to mention that the characters are nicely 'written' so that they are always the same. Which means my handwriting doesn't get in the way of me learning the characters.

Such features as turning on/off hiragana and katakana to learn one set of characters at a time is a great way to customize your study. It is possible to have it tell you the answer, which is good for learning if you can't tell what the character means.

Overall, it's a great little tool. And anyone that needs to test their knowledge of the Kana character sets should try this out.

Would like sound

I like this program a lot. It has a simple interface and it is light weight. It would be a good if you could add a sound button for each kana to help with identification. I also found that the pronunciation for "hu" is wrong. It is more accurately pronunced "fu".

Thanks again,
Jon

Dreamkana and me

Hello, and thank you for this great program.
I´m studing Japan and dreamkana is just so good for my trainig. Thank you so much, who ever inventet, programmet, and put this software in internet for free.

cumbersome interface

I like how DreamKana tests me on my skills, but it lacks an interface that a) learns the specific Kana that I am having trouble with, b) doesn't allow me to search for characters when I want to look them up, and c) doesn't quiz me in reverse order from what it offers (i.e. 'ka' is what kana?).

Also, please try to program a keypad shortcut (return seems plausible to me) that allows testers, after a correct or incorrect answer is plugged into Dreamkana, to skip to the next question without having to use a mouse. Constantly having to change back and forth between mouse and keyboard is probably my biggest gripe about this program. Above all else, this is what made me delete DreamKana and not save it as an addition to my tools to learn Japanese.

Thanks, and here are my suggestions

This is a really useful, easy to use program!

I would like to suggest providing some indication; function, sound, or visual, when an incorrect answer has been entered and the "next kana" button is pushed; it's a little too easy when going fast to whip past a wrong answer without noticing until it's too late to try again.

It might be just my imagination, but I thought it repeatedly asked me the same ones and almost ignored others.

I am using this program to help me speed up my recognition of hiragana, and also as a memory aid.

Thank you very much for providing this program free.

My view on DreamKana..

This is a very small and useful product, which I immediately recommended to my boyfriend. Since we have both recently started studying japanese. Using this software, has helped me memorize the Hiragana characters a bit better without the confusion. To me, it became like a drilling session so that in no time at all the characters became second nature. Not to mention it's very convenient typing the corresponding key using the keyboard, instead of clicking on the screen.

This product is great for beginners learning to write Hiragana and Katakana.
